I have a DCS Commander base unit not the hand held and it will not recognize my PS 3 locomotives. Does anyone know if there is a firmware upgrade to get it to work with my locomotive? It has a serial port that is supposed to be used for something. Any Help

There's only been one software upgrade for the DCS Commander to Version 1.4 in January 2011. You can get it by clicking here.
However, since the original DCS Commander was made to operate MTH HO engines under DCS, and all of MTH's HO engines are PS3, I'd be extremely surprised if the original firmware in the device was unable to operate PS3 engines.
I respectfully suggest that you have some other issue going on.
I had this problem with ps2 engines - problem turned out to be a wiring issue. positive side from track was on wrong output terminal. I swapped the wires and now all my engines work well.

I thought that it should work for PS 3 too but it doesn't see the locative. It does see all my PS 2 locomotives without a problem. I will try the firmware upgrade and see what happens. As for getting a hand held DCS, I have had one that broke only after a few months and couldn't get MTH to fix it that is why I bought the DCS commander which so far has proved to be much more reliable than their handheld. I will just have to run the PS 3 locomotive in conv mode.
Something is up with your track or possible internal to the engine. DCS Cdr should have no problem addressing a PS-3 engine. G
