Setup:  DCS to two loops through tiu fixed voltage 1 and 2 used for the loops.  Power source is old Lionel zw.  Wiring - one set of wires traces each loop around the room and provides feeders every three feet or so.  Using most recent DCS software.

For the past two years DCS signal has been ok.  Suddenly I can't get a signal almost anywhere on the layout.  I do get signal where the wires plug into the track initially.  Any thoughts on the sudden problem or how to track and fix it?

Since you say it worked ok in the past, I would suggest as a starter that you check all wire connections & splices, including track connections and track joints.  I once had a problem with reducing signal strength, and eventually I found that a connection had opened.  Since it had worked, I would not go in for any rewiring.

To check TIU performance, I suggest completely disconnecting one output from the layout, and connecting it to a separate section of track on which you can place a loco, to get a signal strength reading.  If you can't get a good reading, that would tend to indicate a TIU failure.  If you get a good signal, it's some disconnect, or possibly two conductors coming into contact, on the layout.

Here's a troubleshooting sequence that may be helpful:

Confirm the track and wiring installation is sound.  Electrical connections work loose.
Run a train in conventional mode slowly to be sure there are no electrical dead spots or faults.
Rail must be clean for conducting signal to and from engines.
Pickup rollers must be clean inside and out. (Use electronic spray cleaner from auto parts store for cleaning.)
Track joints may need tightening.
All wire connections must be tight enough so the wire cannot be pulled out of the connection.

David,

Since the problem arose abruptly, the chances are good is that it did so because something regarding the layout has changed. Some possibilities are:

  • A light bulb across the TIU has burned out
  • You did some recent re-wiring
  • You added a new siding
  • The transceiver boards in the TIU, remote or both have loosened in their sockets. Try running with the TIU and the remote tethered and see if the problem goes away
  • Your TIU has developed a problem on one or more channels. Try using a different TIU channel and see if the problem goes away. Make sure, however, that the TIU always has power for itself via either Fixed Channel #1 input or the Aux. Power port.
