Hi Forumites. I have a brass PRR 0-6-0 shifter by Williams. I'd like to change the cab numbers by removing the numbers.....which appear to be decals....I'm not sure. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'd rather not mess up the nice paint..... have any of you removed cab numbers from Williams brass locos? thank you in advance....Tom

The factory lettering should be pad-printed ink (maybe paint) rather than deals. If they are after-market decals (any "film" around the letters?) soaking them with a damp rag for a while should loosen them. There are decal removers - Microscale sells one.

For the factory lettering on metal pieces I usually use acetone. Typically this will remove the lettering without touching the paint - but test in an out-of-the-way area first. Paint varies. Apply with a small, clean paint brush; wipe with a clean cloth; repeat is necessary. Do not use acetone on a plastic piece.

Take your time; get familiar.

Make sure what they are first. As stated they can be tampo (pad), decals or even stickers (Williams Dreyfuss Hudson).  Decals applied correctly will be hard to remove....and the paint is not easy to protect.   I find some decals can be removed by applying Walthers Solvaset and gently scraping with a dull tooth pick or swab stick.  Stickers I peel and use alcohol to remove gunk. Tampo I use a ultra fine sanding stick with a drop of wet water (water with soap added)
