I didnt want to hijack the other detector thread...

There seems to be no continuity between railroads as to the information provided by defect detectors.

For example, CSX territory in N.Grafton MA goes something like this:

"North Grafton, Track two, no defects, total axle count 44, train speed 49, detector out"

while on the NE Corridor in Rhode Island it goes something like this...

"defect detector, milepost 168.2, Track One, no defects, temperature 72 degrees, detector out"

I wish the NE corridor gave train speeds as the Acela is moving right along at this point in Rhode Island.

Is there a reason why some give temp and others give speed and axle count?

The KCS detectors that I've heard, also give the train direction.  The BNSF and KCS detectors have a "male" voice and the UP detectors have a "female" voice.  There are a couple on the BNSF that only report on trains headed in a specific direction.

<Disclaimer>

All comments are about detectors I have heard on the UP, BNSF, and KCS in Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri.  Your experiences may vary.
