So they derailed. Unless those auto carrier cars actually rolled over, there usually is no damage to the autos inside. You didn't provide a link to the "story", so we really have no idea exactly what happened.

It is winter, so derailments happen!

That section of track where the yard meets the P&W (Providence & Worcester) tracks is rough. The permanent speed restriction of 10MPH throughout that 2 mile stretch usually keeps the stuff on the tracks. However I bet the rapid freezing / thawing that has been occurring here this last week had something to do with this event.

In addition you have a pretty nice downgrade all the way from Gardner to Worcester.

This time of year there are several areas of 5-10 mph restrictions due to ice around switches and guard rails through some tunnels on the P&W.

I remember going into that yard and not being able to complete our move because the coal hoppers on the adjacent track were tipping due to bad track work to the point we would have scraped our engine on the coal cars had we attempted to proceed.

Thankfully no one was hurt as the track is very close to homes / businesses in the area.

its gotta be that because we had tons of ice and th colder it got, the higher it lifted.  if they had melt and then a refreze quick, I bet the ties heaved a little and or ice got under the rail and tie and lifted it. water is very powerful!  if it can blow an engine block apart, it can heave anything.
