After building my Atlas Roundhouse, I decided I should have detailed it better. The bricks look to new. Any tips on how to detail the bricks after the structure has been assembled. On other models I have used white paint then wipped it off, but with all the other pieces already glued in place, I am afraid I might get paint where I dont want it.

Any suggestions?

Have you ever tried lightweight spackle? I have used DAP spackle with good success. Much easier to control than paint if you are worried about it getting in the wrong places. It takes weathering powders well too. A big tub is  about $10 at the big box stores. You are probably going to get a variety of techniques. I would suggest trying them on scrap brick pieces to see which one you like best. I often buy a junk parts box at train shows for a buck or two just to experiment with different techniques. In addition to the flour, some use baby powder. Robert's Brick Mortar (I have not tried it yet) has had good reviews on this forum. I have the Atlas Roundhouse kit too, and will be putting it together first. Good luck and please post pics,

I have used roberts's brick mortar for years with very good results. mix very thoroughly, apply with any size brush, let dry to a white powdery look, then wipe with a damp rag. best part is you can wipe anytime, minutes, hours or days after drying. you will notice that some white film may reappear on the brick surface, so just wipe again with that wet rag. if you want to tone down the mortar effect brush some alcohol & India ink mix on certain areas to get a more varied, less uniform effect. I think the suggestion above to experiment on a scrap piece to master the technique and see what you like is a good one. it will not matter if the building is assembled.

Usually it is relatively easy with a  brick panel laying flat.  Then diluted latex paint follows the mortar lines without much trouble.  I actually did a wash 3 or 4 times until I got this effect.

I did a wash on the Korber 304 house and then after assembly grimed it down with grimy black over spray.

Yes.  This Korber 304 house uses a Krylon Ruddy brown primer for the brick red, which is a little more difficult to work with.  Using a Grey latex paint, diluted, has a tendency to color more brick light grey than you would like.  The grimy black overspray tones down the wash.

Thanks,
