Considering the mostly flat terrain the MOP used to run in, I doubt that they did. Maybe Kirkwood Hill out of St. Louis, but I don't know for sure. I know east of Pueblo, Co. they didn't. Back in those days they were call mid train helpers. Some road referred the rear set of helpers slave units.

Yeah, back in the seventies, midtrain helpers were manned on the SP.

I did not know the railroad term DPU, so off to the Union Pacific web page I went. Used the railroad term index and found the following.

DPU (Distributed Power Unit)

A locomotive set capable of remote-control operation in conjunction with locomotive units at the train's head end. DPUs are placed in the middle or at the rear of heavy trains (such as coal, grain, soda ash and even manifest), to help climb steep grades, particularly in the West.

If I remember, the DB equiped SD40-2's on the MoPac were numbered in the 6000"s.
