I assume the rotary converters have been replaced by solid state equipment by now. The question is did they leave the rotary converters in place?  I have seen other rotating machines left and abandon because it is just too difficult to remove them. I visited what was probably the next substation up the line, I think it was around Tarrytown, NY, several years back.  It was the first time I had seen rotary converters powered from 25 cycle power.  They turned so slow you could hear the brushes contact each commutator bar. Those machines would probably have lasted for ever.  A real tribute to General Electric.

The New York subway system also used under ground converter stations, probably for the same reason.  Street level property was too expensive to use to build power stations on.
