Given the frantic schedules those of us working have to keep nowadays, one has to ask ones self: Do we REALLY want to HAVE to return to such in order to indulge in the hobby?

This modeler says thank Heavens there are options:

* Craftsman kits.

* Kitbashing.

* RTR.

Harmon,     Knowing you are a scratch builder of some note, a question: How long did it take you to acquire the skills/know-how to do what you do these days (assuming a start from scratch).

Avoiding something, and knowing one's limitations are two distinctly different things.

Thanks,

Simon

It has taken years to develop the skills necessary to build a locomotive.  I have never factored in the time element, it takes what it takes.  For myself, the final result is what I wanted.  Scratch building certainly is not for everyone.  When I see the declining amount of home built models in the model contests it seems the hobby is becoming more of a take it out of the box thing.  I guess the times they are a changing. Look at SJVRR's wonderful scenery on his little layout.  It is impossible to get that from a box.  Needs to be done by the builder.  I imagine his first efforts were not as good as his later work.  Had to start somewhere, but he started.
