Does anyone here run their trains in summer?

Year around, because the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is the busiest during the summer other than Christmas and the holiday season

Trains run 24/7- 12 month's a year on the West Coast

all year round at least 5 hours a week or more

Even though my setup is in the garage, which here in central Texas is referred to as a "sauna" during the summer months, I dodder out there a couple or three evenings a week to watch the trains go 'round.  However, I don't work on the layout much in the summertime.

I run and fire 1:1 scale steam locomotives all Summer, so my toy trains are mainly a winter thing.  Though I love my job, toy trains are one of the last things I think about on my days off work during the summer.  Usually I start pulling them out sometime in October to prepare for my Christmas display at the Redford Theatre.

As a kid, I ran my trains LESS in the summer (that old house was not air conditioned, and we had high humidity in the river valley, and it was cooler outdoors) , and did other hobbies and outdoor stuff....as an "adult"? I am doing something with them twelve months of the year....even if only getting on this train related blog.

Layout goes dormant during summer, but is kept at the ready in case someone wants to see them run.  But no, during summer, wife and I are outside activities or on travels, so choo-choos are quiet.

Summer here is hot and humid.

My cellar layout's ambient temperature is 70 degrees (with no AC ) and, with a dehumidifier, it has 50% humidity.  I spend a lot of time running trains in the Summer. 

I spend my Winter building and constructing, but Summer is time to run those babies!

Yes, mostly in the evenings, since the lack of daylight curtails my outdoor activities.

I also live in the north, where winters are cold and summers are hot. I run my trains and work on the layout October thru April.

The layout is always ready to run in the summer, and I will run trains if we have guests who are interested. Generally the trains only run a few times during the summer months. Summer up here is too short to be inside.

My trains are in the basement, have almost always been in a basement, going back to when I was a kid. And although I love being outside in the summer, there comes that point where going down into that cool basement is blessed relief!

If I do not run something the rails pick up something that makes a Fall start up difficult.  Like the real thing one has to keep the rails polished by moving some traffic, even if it is a single loco making the rounds.

In Houston, we do INSIDE stuff in the SUMMER, OUTSIDE stuff in the WINTER.  In the fall, after the first cold front, we air out houses!  So yes, many in the area run trains in the summer!  In my case, I like running diesels in the summer, steam in the winter!

Yep. Now that I have the High Line complete. I try to run trains for an hour every night!

Great therapy. Better than a couple of 200 mg Ibuprofen before bed time.

I am fortunate enough to have an air-conditioned bedroom dedicated to our 8' x 8' train platform with Legos.  It's fun to be a kid again...

I run in the summer because our group meets at different layouts to run trains and have a dinner.

My trains know no season. Beside, summer is hot and the train room is nice and cool.

Since summers are 100+ here, staying indoors is what we do, so trains it is.  The winters here are the out doors times as it's only like 4 months a year it's nice enough to go out.  Rest of the year it's too hot.  But I run trains all year.

All the time, indoors with climate controlled space.  I had 2 layouts outside of the house, one in a 12x16 shed and the other in the detached garage.  Trekking out to run trains in the winter or the dark was no fun and both had heat and AC.

The layout is now in a 12x12 upstairs room, hopefully will enlarge it (the entire upstairs) in the future.

It's pretty much the only time I can do anything train related. Otherwise I'm at school from September to the end of April.

We do, since there is a separate heating/AC unit for up-stairs.

Maybe about a year and a half ago I changed the way I was doing running and working on the layout. I now do the whole year. When summer comes and it rains it is a layout day whether working or running..............Paul

All year.  Summer is our club's open houses.  I have a basement layout and do some work or just run the trains to check they are ok.

In my case, I actually do more modeling in the summer, (hot and humid weather and me don't mix) but I do more operating in the winter with the club.

I run mine all year long but does slow down in summer months being busy with outside work.

Like bill l......its 24/7/ 12 months here..... with the layout in the basement, its the best place to be....I just enjoy the hobby so much...

The four Southern California seasons are a bit different -- Quake, Wildfire, Protest, and Mudslide , but the temperature is pretty consistent, so we run all year.

My basement layout is in use all 12 months of the year.

Absolutely!!  In fact, summer is when I get to turn the smoke units on by setting up a train or two on the Patio Pacific a few times each summer.

I'm a year long operator 'cause its nice and cool in the basement especially when the dog days hit but I must admit my peak running time is during December through April.

All year absolutely. My layout is in the main part of my house and if it is hot I open everything up and strip down (I have whole house A/C but don't run it), you can't work or play outside all the time. Depends a lot on the weather.

Sadly in the summer rarely.  Other than my son occasionally running them.  Most years I cover the layout up to keep the dust off.  I'm hoping to change that this year.  My goal is to keep the dust of the head of the rails by visiting the basement on those super hot days.

Like Matt, I'm on So Cal, so all rear round is good.

Before I started tearing down my layout I ran them year round.  It's always a cool ~60 degrees in a crappy basement so it feels like winter the year round! 

Once the new layout is up I'll return to running them year round.

I run my trains all year long. Here in southeast Florida(West Palm Beach) winter is not that cold but summer is extremely hot outside, sometimes in the mid 80's in the morning and near 100 in the afternoon.

I put window tint on my windows because of the sunlight during the day.

Late August begins the Fall train season with a 9 day run at the Chesterfield County Fair.....easily 90 degrees any of those days.
