We have double headed a pair of PS-3 SD70's back to back. They seem to run fine as a pair forward or reverse except for when in "reverse" (trailing unit running forward) the ditch lights don't operate when you blow the horn. Understand the horn and bell sounds do not transfer from the lead to the former trailing unit when changing directions, we hoped the light effects would. Is it something we did?

If these are PS2 engines, ditch lights can only be on when running forward. When running in reverse, ditch lights are off.

However, you may be able to have the rear engine's ditch lights on when it's going forward. Try the following from The DCXS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, page 101:

Effect on Member Engines

Initial settings for lashup member engines are always the same for all lashups. These include turning off all interior, marker and number board lights, and all accent sounds, for all lashup members other than the head engine. Only the front-facing headlight on the head engine and the rear-facing headlight on the tail engine will illuminate to indicate which direction the lashup is moving or about to move. This is done to simulate the way real lashups operate. Additionally, only the front-facing Protocoupler on the head engine and the rear-facing Protocoupler on the tail engine will respond to commands from the DCS Remote.

However, individual member engine settings may be changed after the lashup has been created and started up. This may be accomplished as follows:

• After the lashup is started up, press the ENG key to view the Engine List

• Highlight the member engine whose lashup settings are to be changed by either scrolling to it using the thumbwheel or entering its one or two digit DCS ID# using the number keys to highlight the engine. If it's not in the Active Engine List, highlight it and press the thumbwheel to place it in the Active Engine List, and then highlight it again

• Press the thumbwheel to show the engine in the DCS Remote's Engine Control Screen, however, DO NOT START UP THE ENGINE!

• Use DCS menu functions or engine soft keys to make whatever changes are desired to the lashup settings for the selected PS2 member engine. These settings will become active as you select them

• Return to the Engine Control Screen and press ENG to display the Active Engine List

• Highlight the lashup by either scrolling to it using the thumbwheel or entering its one or two digit DCS ID# using the number keys

• Press the thumbwheel to show the lashup in the DCS Remote's Engine Control Screen.

Note that PS3 engines that have ditch lights at both ends can have the rear-facing ditch lights active while in reverse.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!
