"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

Spending only $100.00 won't get much of  a set! Try spending around $200.00 and you can usually get a decent H.O. scale set, or maybe an N scale for that price, but you will have to add track if you want more then a 36 inch by 30 inch layout.

O gauge or O scale you may have to step up to the tune of $350.00 for a decent set.

I have been looking at prices for new sets & engines in many sizes and $100.00 doesn't go far!

Hello guys and gals.........

I believe you could get this train set for 100 dollars ( I am guessing)  it can be a postwar set with 2037 and few 0-27 cars plus 1033 transformer (input 90 watts, output 60watts) and basic oval (0-27 track).  The lionel 2037 is a good 0-27 engine and very common thus making it easy to find one in good running condition and parts supply is good for this engine.  I had a 2029  48 years ago !!!

Since you're open minded regarding scale, my suggestion would be Bachmann's HO "Rail Chief". The set contains a nicely detailed and decorated BNSF GP40 and several pieces of decent quality rolling stock. Unlike many of Bachmann's boxed sets of years past, the components in this set are of high quality and the locomotive is a smooth runner. The package also includes trackside accessories. There's a lot of play value here. As far as price is concerned, the set can be found at the upper end of your range such as right here:

Whenever I give a set as a present, it's the Bachmann "Rail Chief". It has not disappointed me or a lucky recipient yet.

Good luck.

If you want to start in O scale the best I recommend at $150  is the Broadway Limited from lionel.  Pat has one in WV.  If Pat is selling it, I guarantee it works.   Seebroadway.  You can likely get a small older set for $100, if you canwait for TV a train show near you.  Also check with your local hobby shop.  Explain your budget and they should be able to show you some options.

What about the Lionchief Scout set? I have heard of those selling for ~$100 before.

I would avoid the lionchief scout personally. If you watch videos of the current scout engine you will notice it waggle going down the track.  The drive gear between the wheels  is very thin and can nearly come disengaged with the teeth on the back side of the wheels.   The lionchief electronics will demand fixed higher  voltage to the track, so it will come with a wall wart like a phone charger and a remote. This means that if you get another  engine in the future you will likely still need a traditional transformer. That may not bother you but you should be aware of the situation.

Lionchief is a good product line in general, but with yyour stated budget its a bit of stretch.
