That would have been pretty rare for only one prime mover to be "on the line". Unlike the previous models of the "E unit" (like E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7) where each prime mover had four exhaust stacks, the E8/E9 model have only one larger exhaust stack for each prime mover. Sometimes one prime mover may smoke a bit more than the other, however.
