i have a few sets of MTH E8's with one smoke unit putting out smoke on what I assume is for the front prime mover. I've noticed several videos on YouTube where it appears the real E8's have smoke coming out of only one of the smoke stacks like on my MTH E8's. Did or do the railroads run these engines with only one prime mover?

That would have been pretty rare for only one prime mover to be "on the line". Unlike the previous models of the "E unit" (like E3, E4, E5, E6, and E7) where each prime mover had four exhaust stacks, the E8/E9 model have only one larger exhaust stack for each prime mover. Sometimes one prime mover may smoke a bit more than the other, however.
