I have a 4-6-6-4 MTH Challenger engine with Protosound 2.0, Model #20-3170-1.  It operates beautifully.  On the remote this evening I pressed button #4 on the keypad to turn off the engine sounds.  The sounds went off (although I could still operate the bell and whistle with their individual handheld controls).  When I pressed button #4 to turn back on the engine sounds, I was unable to restart the sounds.  I tried the same thing on another PS 2.0 engine, and I was able to turn off the sound and then successfully turn it back on.  I am charging the 4-6-6-4 PS 2.0 battery now with the MTH external charger, to see if a fully charged battery will help the issue.  Anybody else have any ideas as to how I can get the sound going again?  The engine and tender work perfectly in all other respects.

To reset your engine:

  • Press Menu and scroll to ADVANCED using the thumbwheel
  • Press the thumbwheel and scroll to RESET ENGINE
  • Press the thumbwheel and scroll to FEATURE RESET
  • Press the thumbwheel and scroll to the engine that you desire to reset
  • Press the thumbwheel to select the engine
  • Press the thumbwheel to confirm.

The engine will be Feature Reset and engine sounds should come back.

I had the same thing happen on a friends 20-3127-1 Big Boy.  The engine sounds had become extremely low and the resets were not successful. Pressing #4  or trying to increase the volume had no effect.   I  tested the batteries  to see if they were holding a charge.   This was a 3 volt system and contained 2 single AA rechargeable batteries in a plastic holder without the blue or green shrink-wrap.    I always test these batteries under load with a 1.5 bulb as it is more reliable than a voltmeter in indicating battery condition.   A bright bulb indicates a good battery.  (I use a 12 volt bulb to test a 9 volt battery found in the 5 volt PS2 system.)  One battery failed.  Replacing the battery with a new charged one solved the problem. I then replaced the other battery in the holder to avoid problems in the near future. For the MTH shrink-wrap AA battery version I use a 3 volt bulb for testing.

Hi Ron,

Very good information.  My Challenger has the 2005 vintage 7.2V (I think this is what it is, but I don't have the instruction manual, as I have the factory prototype which just came in a stryrofoam shell).  I got really good information today from Barry, who wrote the DCS manual, and I solved the problem with a reset on the handheld.  I appreciate your writing and suggestions for the future.
