I've got a post war 2035, 690 steam engine and I can't get it to run. How do I troubleshoot it to determine the problem. The directional switching sounds like it's working. I cleaned the rotor commutator and brushes to no avail. Putting voltage directly at the brushes only results in a buzzing sound and a slight wheel movement.

The engine has been sitting a long time.

Applying power directly to the brushes does not work.  In order for the motor to spin, there must be power to the field coil as well as the brushes.  The normal power flow is power runs from the field coil to brush one, through the commutator, then out the second brush holder, and then to ground.  The E-Unit reverses the power to the brushes by switching which brush gets the power first.

First, check the wheels to ensure they turn freely and nothing is binding.  If they are free, my next thought would be the eunit.  I would check the finger contacts to ensure they are making good connection with the drum.  You could try gently pushing on one contact at the time, against the drum to see if the motor starts to spin.

Thanks for your quick response - I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know.
