Hi all, I've never posted on the site before, but figured I'd pick your brains and see if someone can help me identify this coach I picked up. I think it might be Ernst Plank, but I unfortunately don't have enough literature to confirm my suspicions. It's general colors seem similar to other Plank I've seen, but I never saw a coach quite like this one. It is gauge II, and has no markings on it, but some interesting things to note are that it has real glass for windows, wooden wheels, and brass (?) rivets on the drop link couplers.

Any ideas?? Anyone have photos of any similar cars, Plank trains, or Plank catalogs to share?

Is it gauge 1 or gauge 0?

It is Plank, but the catalog litho shows the gauge 1 version which has 2 roof ventilators. If it is gauge 0 it would make sense that it did not come with the roof vents. I will try to scan the catalog page tomorrow.

There are several decent books on R&G, they mainly made trains in gauge 1, with a small amount of gauge 0 (at least in the catalogs that have turned up) R&Gs accessories are fantastic though. They also made Forts, carriages, landscape pieces with fountains and doll house furniture (with some amazing paint work) What information are you looking for?

Thanks for the reply, Roland.

The coach is actually 2 gauge. And I would love to see a catalog if you could manage to scan it.

As far as info I'm looking for, I suppose I'd just like to confirm the car's manufacture, and maybe get an idea of what locomotive went along with it. It'd be great to know the specific years that it was made too. Some recommendations for literature on R&G and/or EP would be great too. I don't really know of many books that are out there, but from what I've seen, RG did make some really impressive accessories.....

Lally,

sorry, it took longer to get back to this than I expected.
Below is a page from a Plank 1914 catalog.

Plank Coaches

This is a page from Volume 3 ("Band 3") of "Die Anderen Nürnberger". This volume has several Plank catalogs as well as some info on Issmayer, Tipp toys and George Levy (Gely) toys.

I recommend the first 5 volumes of this series. They used to be very expensive (vol 1 more than $200) but they seem to be coming down in price.

Volume 5 has information on R&G and some Carette.

My favorite book for R&G is "Vergessenes Blechspielzeug" aka "Germany's Forgotten Toymakers" This contains most of the information known on R&G as well as information on Lutz.

Roland,

Thanks for the scan of the catalog. That is certainly the same car. Strange about the roof ventilators, but my car doesn't have any sign of them ever being there.

I'll keep my eyes out for Die Anderen Nurnberger, especially the first 5 volumes. I don't have much literature on early German trains right now other than "The Golden Years of Tin Toy Trains," which is a great resource with info on R&G, Plank, and others. I'm always looking for more...

And if you know of any pre WWI German trains for sale, please drop me a line. I'm always on the hunt! Especially for Plank and Carette.
