ERR Smoke unit or board

ERR doesn't have a smoke unit, why not just replace the noisy motor in the K4? 

Try a little drop of oil on the motor bushing and if that does not help try to move the fan blades so they do not rub the housing as they spin. I did both to mine and it worked. The engine shell is easy to remove and the fan unit unplugs for easy removal. These are quite simple to put together. While it is apart I replaced the smoke wick with a new one.

I'm not sure it is just the motor but I may try that first. They don't cost much.

That was one thing that I might try. However, I'm not sure just a drop of oil will be a long term fix.

 

Someone posted that the new Mega Steam product has a lubricating effect so I may try that and stop using the Lionel smoke fluid.

I'm not sure what else would be making noise in a smoke unit.   The only noisy component I've ever found is the motor.

The K4 and the PRR U28c use the same motor.

 

The only difference seems to be that the K4 has an electrical pulse that causes the puffing. The U28c only streams the smoke out but does not puff and is not noisy.

 

Is your K4 noisy?

 

I have no issues with my Legacy K4 smoke unit, it has no unusual noise.  Now, my Legacy U-boats are a different issue, I may yet have to replace the motors in those, they are noisier than any other engine.  It's not that apparent with the sound, which is why I haven't done anything yet.

I have a K4 legacy and I am having some smoke issues. Whistle smoke works great but main smoke unit is not working and cab light is flashing. Would this be a faulty PCB?

Any help I would appreciate

 

 

What number of flashes?  Three is the smoke fan motor.

 

It's not clear that it's available. If it is used in older engines, wouldn't it be listed as available? Or maybe you could buy an older engine's smoke unit whole if it uses the same motor.

If you like, I'll sell you an MTH smoke motor.  It's compatible, and I've replaced about a dozen motors in various Legacy engines with these, I haven't gotten any of them back.

That would be wonderful since Lionel says the smoke fan motors for that engine are unavailable. (according to the parts site)
