There are lots of features on our toy trains that need improvements in reliability, functionality and scale (size). Please post yours. Here's my eyeopeners for the train companies that lurk on this forum:

  • Total LED lighting! It is extremely annoying to be replacing incandescent bulbs in locomotives, coaches and cabooses that have less life than normal with the higher fixed-voltage of DCS, TMCC, Legacy, etc. Moreover, incandescent bulbs are current hogs, they produce too much heat and they cost too much. And do not forget about the bulbs in the switches and switch controllers;
  • Reliable electromechanical switches, particularly those in the sectional track product lines such as Real Trax, Fastrack and others. There are few thinks that can kill the fun of running trains and a malfunctioning switch has to be No. 2. It is particularly aggravating when a switch on a layout with scenery has to be taken up for fixing and it usually a mainline line switch crucial to running trains;
  • Return to the tether in steam locomotives, but shorten it, make it more flexible (elevator wire), run it straight between the locomotive & tender and disguise it as a water feed line;
  • Traction tires made of a more durable material.
  • Downsize the couplers and improve their mating reliability. It is annoying to use rubber bands to keep couplers from unlocking and slamming cars together to make the couplers work is not a pretty sight;
  • Offer unpainted rolling stock to facilitate those of us who want favored road names not likely to be produced otherwise;
  • Crew figures in all locomotives.

Some will say I should send this to MTH, Lionel and the others, but that has been done over the years and they apparently find their way into the circular file. By posting on this forum, it offers and compiles many ideas and opinions than just one person could bring forth.

Why bring back the tether?  I sort of like it because it is easier to manipulate than the wireless drawbar.  Although I have sore of gotten use to the wireless drawbar.

If the MTH PS3 Veranda is the beginning of a trend I would say to the train manufacturers is to pay attention to details.  They got the smoke unit entirely incorrect on the PS3 unit but was correct on the PS1 unit.  What happened?  I am leary about buying another PS3 engine if I am going to see this kind of carelessness again.

Improve DCS so the signal is more forgiving.  Make it easier to identify engines on DCS.  Maybe assign a serial number to each engine and program the serial number into the DCS remote and it is automatically programmed into the remote without trying 10 to 20 times for DCS to identify the engine.

Doublechecking details - I have an MTH heritage unit SD70Ace on order (should have been here two months ago but that's already been covered)  and I know the cab door will be on the wrong side.

I can actually appreciate a wire in between the tender and loco if it looks like a hose that belongs there.

My big item - and one that I think would help more kids get into the hobby, offer cars at a reduced price in kit form.   My brother is five years younger than me and had HO trains as a kid.  We would both go to the hobby store as kids with $20 in our pockets.  He could get a handful of walthers kits and go home and build another train.  I had to settle for a train magazine of some kind and put the rest of the money back in my pocket until I afford to buy a single car.  I know trying to get kids to actually do anything that doesn't involve a display screen and involves some critical thinking is difficult to do but if the price point was right I think kits would definitely be a boon for the hobby. (IMHO)
