I have a NIB "Thunder Valley Mines" coal dump car from a few years back.  I have been running it on the layout empty because the coal is messy and I haven't set up a proper place to dump or load coal yet.

I have noticed the mechanism on this car to be extremely sensitive, to the point that it dumps sometimes at random while the train is running.  For this reason, I have been reluctant to load it with coal even when I do get a coaling operation in place on the layout.

I'm curious, are they all that sensitive, or did I get a bad one?  Also, is there anything I can do to make the mechanism less sensitive?  This one seems to just have a magnetic pin that releases when the actuating piece is pulled downward by the operating track electromagnet.

As a test, put some log loads which won't be messy if they dump and see if the added weight keeps the car from random dumps.  I have several on my layout and they don't randomly dump, the magnet is pretty strong.  So I would see if there is an alignment issue or if one of the side pins on the dump bin is broke.  G
