I ran across an image of a painting on the www yesterday and was surprised to see a Pacific class loco with D valves.   Does anyone have info of any other US 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives with D valves.  A while ago I was contemplating Bashing a Pacific from a Rivarossi Casey Jones and was searching for photos of just such an early Pacific with D valves.  Attached painting of a Southern 4-6-2 loco I'm going to call it a P-1.  The Milwaukee Road had an early one off Compound Pacific with D valves which I don't think ever progressed beyond the testing stage. South Africa Railroad also had an early Pacific with D valves though New Zealand is credited with the first however it had piston valves. So I guess my question is did Southern Railroad actually have such a Pacific with D valves ?        J1248

Rusty,  Baldwin also built the Pacific for New Zealand which historians give credit as being the first Pacific to get beyond test stages and go into production .  I guess for some time the choice of piston vs D valves was on a loco by loco basis.  Guess it took a while to convince RRs that pistons were better.          j
