My brother has this old  Lionel train from 2001, it’s a Hudson. It’s called the New Jersey Medical school freight train. Maybe none of you guys have even heard of this. I’ll send a picture of the box. Now on to the problem. It doesn’t run in forward it can only run in reverse. The smoke unit doesn’t work either and we’ve tested it before. The tenders whistle is less responsive than it used to be. We’ve even took it to the hobby shop to get it fixed but that didn’t work either. Now here we are 4 years later and now I can find some answers. Do you guys know what’s wrong? And if you can teach me how to fix this one.

Well, here's the parts page for that engine. https://www.lionelsupport.com/...amp;CFTOKEN=52919549

It still has a direction lock switch and a smoke on/off switch. Located just under the cab/firebox area. Given the user seems to have it locked in reverse, they likely haven't given it enough power for the smoke to properly work or have the smoke and direction lock switches confused- and since the manual doesn't give a picture, well, that's not a completely unsurprising mistake one would make.

Second issue- sound. Might be the transformer to track wiring, but also could just be track voltage because the engine is locked in reverse, so they aren't going with a lot of throttle, so then the whistle might not trigger. Also, could be this is the can motor style whistle, thus an electronic whistle board, and given the age of the motor and so forth, might have that whistle control PCB with a resistor current limiting the motor, and since the motor might need more current to spin up, well that explains not as responsive or loud as they remembered. Lionel parts does not show me the exact tender for this engine but apparently since several Hudson Jr. engine were made for various special road names, I'm confident this is at least a representative example of what to expect inside that air whistle tender. https://www.lionelsupport.com/...1b-82c4-557661854110

In fairness, given this is that standard reverse board, I've seen my fair share of ones with a blown BJT pair, and they do only go in one direction and may do so slowly because the other now dead pair is shorting the output slightly. Another topic for another day but a self destructive circuit where the motor draws a little more current due to age, load, and lack of lube, that in turn heats the transistors, they go into self destruct thermal runaway. and, given nature- happens to the forward direction pair.

Well good thing is that theirs hope for my brothers train too.

Unfortunately it’s not that Hudson this is conventional. It’s item number is 6-21796. https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ents/72-1796-250.pdf

That is the manual for the set which states that each piece comes with its own manual. Lionel used generic manuals as many engines had the same/similar internals. Like the locomotive in question, the manual deals with the 103E unit (see the above shard exploded parts picture) which potentially addresses your direction control issue and described as called out on pg 6. The sections on command are a little of a red hearing as some locomotive supported railsounds and command upgrades despite being shipped conventional.

Another thing it’s not the switches because forward and reverse are on, I just need to know what parts need to be replaced. Like I said I’ll send you guys a video and continue from their.
