Is it difficult for someone experienced with working modern/post-war Lionel to fix a pick up on a flying yankee? I’d like to buy one, but it has a missing pickup and this will be my first pre-war purchase.

I assume you are talking about the sliding shoes. Is the whole plate and sliders missing? You would replace it like on a postwar 1666 or 2026, slightly spread the motor sides to pop it out or replace.

Looks like the wheels have some zinc rot going on, too.
Rusty
The sliding shoes just snap in. But it looks like a piece of metal is broken where the shoe should go in your picture. A small flat blade screwdriver is all you need. Slide the screwdriver under the flat spring and lift slightly and extract the shoe or install.
Isn't that "broken metal" Whats left of the old shoe?
I always wanted one of those too.
I'd run it as is till a wheel falls off

Only if it would still fit on the track! Many times they swell out and will not fit. That said, if i could, I'd run it!
We have whatever parts you would need for this unit. The collector shoe appears to be all right, just missing the shoe. The wheel sets are available also ( MEW sets we mfg. ). Harry

One of my all time favorites. Got mine for $35 at the 1970 TCA National convention
