Here in the past few days every time I try to open any of the forums, I get an error message that a problem with the website has caused IE to stop working. What could be the problem?

IE...Internet Exploder.
Get Firefox.
Just like the elections, I knew YOU would say that. I was actually hoping someone might have a real answer.
Jim, whether you want to admit it or not, IE didn't get the nickname "Internet Exploder" without good reason.
You asked a question about a problem and I told you what would fix it. If you want to continue to use IE, that's your prerogative, of course. But I'm telling you your entire internet experience will be MUCH better with Firefox.
You might check the "compatibility setting" in IE. I don't use IE so I don't know where to find that setting, but that has been a source of trouble in the past.
Firefox has no "compatibility" settings. Doesn't need them...

That is a very real answer.
Almost ANYTHING is preferable to IE, and I would not be surprised if hoop.la has optimized the site for FireFox and Chrome.
That is actually just an alternative. That's OK, I found someone that had a real answer to the problem. Problem fixed.
Well don't keep it a secret. What was the "real" answer?
I heard you made your last run today on the Amtrak excursion. Are you pullin' the pin for good?
Big Jim. I use IE sometimes. I'm curious. What was the problem? Thank you.
The answer is:
Go to "Tools", then "Internet Options", then "Advanced", then scroll down and uncheck "Enable Third Party Browser Extentions".
Problem solved and I don't even know how that box got checked in the first place.
Rich,
Yes, I've made my last run. It was a beautiful Fall day and we had a good trip. Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride. 40 years, it's been a good run!
BTW,
I did try Firefox. Stupid program wouldn't let me connect to my NS Corp Employee web site. Guess that doen't matter now, but, I was able to get there with IE right away. There were other issues that I didn't like about the way Firefox did things, so, I got rid of it for the second time.
I'm glad you got the problem fixed. I made note of what you did for future reference.
The very fact that you had this problem is one indication as to why many people do not like Internet Exploder. Microsoft thinks that everyone on the world wide web should conform to their standards. The very fact that you have to enable what Microsoft calls "Third Party Extensions" in IE is ridiculous. Literally every other web browser out there regards the World Wide Web as an OPEN place, where technology is freely shared and everyone's browser works with everyone's web site. Everyone but Microsoft, that is.
The Norfolk Southern IT people probably wrote the code for the company web site with Microsoft software. And, because Microsoft thinks they should own the web, they have proprietary code in their authoring software that only Internet Exploder understands. Sorry, but they just don't get it.
But hey...you don't have to go there any more anyway! Congratulations on the completion of a 40-year railroad career. What are you going to do now?

Not sure that will help everybody who has a problem with I.E. I have the box checked and have no problems whatsoever with this forum. I am using I.E. 9 with Windows 7. If it worked for you, though, that's great. I have some problems, though, with certain web sites and have found that Firefox works on every one of them. It's too bad that Microsoft doesn't follow all of the standards for the web.

I'm not ready to blame MS. This is a new computer less than a month old. I didn't have this problem until just a few days ago. Even problems that I had with my old computer viewing photos on the OGR Forums are non-existent on this one.
For all I know, my lack of computer savy may have done something to inadvertently check that box or some other program that I installed did it on its own.

I don't think that is actually the case. NS has been getting very tight with "security" on all of their computer related sites lately. It's been more and more a pain to log on to what you want look at.
