No HC1s or N2s/N2sa's in O-scale production.  Someone did a 2-rail USRA light 2-10-2 at some point but the N2s was a USRA heavy 2-10-2.  The only way we'll see these is if Scott Mann decides to take a stab.  Given that it took years to sell out of the 3rd Rail N1s models, I wouldn't hold my breath.  Of course, Lionel could pull a surprise move like their excellent CC2s model.  You never know.

I started a topic yesterday that for some reason got locked after just a couple responses: not sure why. I did mention a different publication, although I think it's now defunct.

Anyway, I got a bunch of 1999-2000 issues of this older magazine and April 2000 had a review (co-authored by one Bob Turner 🙂) of the then newly released Sunset N-1-s.  Would that be close enough, or something you could modify?

From what I am hearing from Scott M's reply to suggested e-mails of new PRR steam, I will most likely have to go that route! IF you can, can you e-mail me the publications. Its in my profile. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the inspiration of this thread was from a disappointed response from Scott Mann.  In short, to make any NEW Brass loco to be mfg., Scott M is looking at a MSRP of $3000.00+! With that target price in mind, one can easily dismiss small to medium size PRR steam locomotive production. This leaves us "SPF's" with the Larger PRR steam models which left that HAVE NOT  been done are:

  • Standard USRA Heavy 2-10-2
  • PRR rebuilt 2-10-2 class N2sa
  • PRR built one of a kind HC1

Scott M claims he placed a feeler out some time ago for the PRR N2sa and there were hardly any takers. He also stated since the HC1 was NOT a "PRR Mainline Locomotive" [it did do pusher service over Horse Shoe Curve] hardly anyone in O scale is interested.

With those two sentiments in Scott M's head, NEW Brass Steam will be a long shot to say the least! Lionel would be our only shot with a Hybrid 2-10-2 in Both USRA and PRR N2sa configurations and/or a Hybrid 2-8-8-0!

I don't think the PRR N1 is a good candidate to convert to an N2.     I haven't checked but I think the boiler dimensions are very different. 

It is too bad we don't see much steam anymore.    Sunset (Scott) imported quite a few at very reasonable prices for the times.    The last one I got was his PRR L1 2-8-2 which is a more detailed than the older stuff I have and it runs very well.    I have his H6sb from years ago and it is one of my favorites.    Those little 2-8-0s will pull 25 cars on my layout on level track.

I think part of the problem is that there are not nearly as many of us interested in steam models any longer.  

A second issue covered by this post has been long lasting.    I think many modelers sought the very large modern steam as opposed to switchers and small and medium sized locos.     This might be because it was what they remembered seeing, or what was published the most at the end of the steam era.    I personally prefer the small to medium size locos on my home layout.    I do not have any duplexii, and do not ever expect to.
