No doubt what my 765 nightmare was.  It was the last day of November, 1979, and after a four year overhaul we were fired up and waiting for morning and the 765's first mainline trip to Bellevue in 21 years on the N&W, former NKP.

Fellow founder Glenn Brendel, myself and Bob McCown of Lakewood, Ohio, were on hostling duty that evening along Ryan Road - 3 miles east of New Haven, IN.  It was getting cold, close to single digit cold, and then all of the sudden there was a loud, sharp crack.  "What was that?".  A quick look on the ground between the engine and tender revealed Niagara Falls - the big tender cistern where the water hose attaches had frozen and cracked and water was gushing out of the split.  OMG!  We can't lose all of that water - there won't be time to have the fire department haul more water out before morning and we will miss the golden opportunity for the 765 to return to the mainline!  It was getting so close to winter that we may miss the opportunity altogether.

Mechanical Engineer Bob McCown had a stroke of genius:  use the torch and cut a flat disc of 1/4" plate with holes that match the bolt pattern on the bottom of the cistern.  Remove most of the bolts and loosen the rest - slip the disc in and insert the first bolt- then rotate the disc into position to block the water from coming out the bottom of the flange fitting.  I got drenched- in freezing weather- but it worked.  The leak was stopped.  We took the valve to a members machine shop - brazed the crack shut - and followed the reverse procedure to get everything back together.  We only lost about 1,000 gallons of water.

That night, I got a few hours of sleep at Glenn's house on his sofa.  I never got warm that night and had troubled dreams that all would go well the next day.  It did and the the deadhead / break-in trip to Bellevue the next day turned out wonderful.  And the rest is history.

My 765 nightmares...

  1. 1982 - Orrville tp Pittsburgh - Saturday Trip
Smoked a main rod bearing. Tied up the railroad for a couple hours.
    Conrail not pleased.
  2. 1982 - Orrville to Pittsburgh - Sunday Trip
Smoked another main rod bearing. Tied up the railroad for a couple hours...again.
    Conrail REALLY not pleased now.
  3. 1988 - Buffalo, NY to New Jersey Deadhead Move - Bad Coal...REALLY Bad Coal.
Had to lay overnight in Binghamton.
Had to use a jackhammer to get the ashes/clinkers out of the firebox.
  4. 1988 - Bound Brook, NJ to Harrisburg - 440 miles at 40 mph. Do the math.
We never made it to Harrisburg.
Turned at Reading and still didn't get back to Bound Brook until after 2 am the next morning.
  5. 1988 - New Jersey to Buffalo, NY Deadhead Move
Ran out of water westbound on Gulf Summit Grade.
Had to cut and run for water.
Crew had "Get Home-Itis" after a horrible experience in New Jersey
  6. 1990 - 40 cars up 22 miles of 1.4% Alleghany Mountain grade on the C&O
Almost asphyxiated in Lewis tunnel - 3/4 mile long.
Learned that 23 mph is NOT a good speed to run through a tunnel.

There are several more, but I have to stop now. I'm starting to tremble...

And no one's made a joke about Scrapiron Eliot yet?

Only dream I have ever had about trains is forgetting about the York meet and showing up as they're shutting it down. Being tardy for something important is a recurring element in my dreams even though it's not a problem I have. Worst one of all time was dreaming that I had completely forgotten about one of my college courses for the entire year and it ruined my scholarships. Have never been so relieved to wake up...

Just curious, did you burn up the replacement bearing, or was it a different one?

On other news, it appears the best was to cause you nightmares is to tell you that 765 is going to New Jersey...
