Alex,
Beautiful layout. What type of video camera did you use to shhot the video.
Thank you for a response.

Excellent work Alex!
Very nice work, Alex. For being retired, and I know how busy "retired" is, it seems to me that you have made tremendous progress. Agree with Russ, love to see those trains running at a realistic, watchable speed. Continued success!
Ron
Bill –
I am really looking forward to the World Greatest Hobby on Tour this weekend, as well as to those who will be visiting us over the weekend.
Chris –
You counted correctly – 31 cars on the BNSF manifest, and 19 on the UP. Once in a while a pull them altogether and that is the longest train I have had so far – 50 cars.

One thing that takes longer than anticipated, although not terribly long, is wiring the buildings for lighting. Some require that lights be added or changed. Others, including some of which I did not expect as they were on the expensive side, required masking of the walls so the lights would not light them up. And then there is the window treatment . . . BTW, I still am using filament tape to simulate blinds, and this works great! (See Pictures attached.) And of course, there is the ballast; but I am happy to say that I have more than half done with that part of the project.
Russ, Ron –
I agree 100%. I run the freight trains between 21 and 25 SMPH, and the passenger trains 31 to 36 SMPH. The MTH engines change their sound at odd intervals, which is why I have the odd speeds. I have run them faster; 45 and 60 respectively, to closer approximate real life speeds, but trains just don’t like right at all, and the faster speeds make the layout look smaller.

I use a Canon Vixia HFM40 that I picked up as a close out for about $450. I was going to buy the newer model, but I liked the features of the HFM40 better, such as built in memory plus two SD cards. I am extremely happy with it. I have videotaped high school football games, and when played on a HD TV, they look like an NFL broadcast in HD. For the ‘on-board’ camera I used an old Flip Camera, but I am ready to replace that one.
Andy, George, Rich – Thank you and everyone else for taking the time to add your nice comments!
Alex
"engines change their sound " I have noticed that as soon as you turn on the sounds the speeds come way down so that the trains SOUND good. Also if you have ever run on a layout with video or watched your own on board videos that the speeds also come way down so it looks good. On a friends 2 rail oscale layout we had both sounds and on board and you know it was interesting if you got the sound right the video looked cool and vice versa. Again great layout I am anxious to see more as you 'finish' the blank spots! Russ
