I had a work assignment in October of 2011 to do some work at the Astoria Generating Station in Queens, NY.  One of the side benefits of this particular job was the ability to take a break on the roof top, one of which had a fanstatic view of the one and only He11 Gate Bridge.  Now I had only seen images of this bridge in Lionel catalogs and never thought I would have occasion to see the real thing.  Since these pictures are from a vantage point must folks will never have access to I thought this would be a good place to share them.  The one pic does not show the bridge itself but the approach towards just to show how long it is.

Hope you enjoy.

I get to see the bridge from another perspective, on the water, as I regularly do boat deliveries up and down the East River. The Hellgate area is a fascinating place. At full flood or ebb tide there are standing waves at the bend in the river (seen under center span) where the Harlem River diverges. Not a place to be running against current with a small engine, and if you're with the current, hold on! It's like a Nantucket Sleighride!

nice photos.

Alan, it's the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Opened in 1930, built by a British company, it's the largest single span steel arch bridge in the world. Traveling through Britain, you will see other smaller examples. It was obviously a popular design back then.

Thanks Dave....  I had seen the pictures of the Sydney bridge before but at different angles than what you posted.  For some reason it didn't register with me that it was very much like the **** Gate over here.  Sydney is certainly a beautiful city....I love the skyline and the architecture.  The bridge just puts the icing on the cake so to speak!!
