I used to visit Sacramento on business probably now, over 10 years ago, until

they closed the facility (to my chagrin, as Sacratmento  is a great place to visit, with Old Town, the RR museum, and highway 49 gold country and Yosemite just  down the road), and I had then tracked down two O scale shops near the now closed Air Force base.  I have since used Sacramentp as a base to visit California, much preferring flying in and out of there than LA or SF.

I think both O scale shops were gone when I visited after the base closure.  North on 99 out of Sacramento still advertised is The Western Depot at Yuba City.   At that time there was a shop in Roseville I think I visited once, too.  I did visit a tinplate shop in downtown SF once, too.  These seem to turn over faster than car salesmen, so I would raid the shop indices in the back of OGR and as many current hobby magazines as you can get hands on, identify locations,  and make a list.

We had to live in Sacto for four months while waiting for our move. I bought all the things I thought I would need at Bruce's before the move. It's one of the biggest train shops I've ever been in. I must say it's also one of the most unfriendly shop I've been in. I went in  a dozen times and bought lots of stuff. No one ever greeted you and ask to help. Amazing. If your in the area be sure to visit the Sacramento RR museum. It's one of the best in the country. There was a nice train store next door with tons on MTH and Lionel but sorry to say it closed. Chan's in San Francisco has a huge selection of Lionel and MTH. North of there is Trains, Dollhouses and more. Also a big selection of three rail stuff but their prices are really high even for things that have been sitting around for years. Don

Another shop worth checking out is Just Trains in Concord (East Bay) with a good selection of Lionel.  For used PW, the best shop by far was a store (actually, a house) in Auburn; however, they have been closed for awhile.  Bruce's is carrying less 3 rail than in the past (and however helpful Bruce and staff may or may not seem, Milo the bird is most welcoming).  Neither  Bruce's, Roseville Hobbies (a very nice large store with a good selection of Lionel) or Just Trains has much in the way of MTH.

By all means, go to the Sacramento Railroad Museum.
