Been noticing trains lately and my wife asked what was up with the different colors marked on the end panels of the hopper cars, blue, green, red etc......
That is the end equipped with the rotary coupler assembly for rotary dumping of the coal.
Read Jack's post again carefully. Hoppers with rotary couplers have this on one end of the car only, the one with the painted panel. The other end, the one without the painted panel, is equipped with a standard non-rotary coupler.
These cars are unloaded by rotating the car upside down. The rotary coupler is what makes this possible.
