Gary,
A good show as usual - lots of layouts - a variety of gauges represented in both layouts and dealers.
Bought the new book by John Taibi, Roads, Rivers, and Rails, which covers the D&H between Albany/Schenectady and Oneonta, as well as interesting stories about the small towns along Rt 7 which parallels the railroad right of way. Excellent.
Also a few odds and ends, unusual scenery items, etc.
Also met lots of old friends among the dealers, as well as a few forumites for the first time.
The show may have been bigger in the past, but the single building housing it now is huge - well worth the easy 2-1/4 hr drive for me each way IMO.
Jim
Jim, Did you have any difficulty getting gas? Fearing difficulty in procuring it, like we are experiencing here, presently, in NJ, is why I did not travel to Syracuse for this event.
Frank M.
Frank,
I think the "gas shortage" rumor in upstate NY was just another fabrication by the "Chicken Little" type people in the media who seem to be out to find things to have people worry about.
However, I wouldn't at all mind conserving or giving up some travel if it meant more fuel would really get to those along the coast who desperately need it.
But, no sign of shortages of any type up here.
Jim
Jim,
It was great to finally meet you!
...and I'm sorry that we didn't have time to sit and chat with all the issues that we were having... Evidently, the new switches that we installed on the club's layout don't like the short length of my Baby Pacific. I finally just put it away and got out the backup Williams engines. Meanwhile, after that was running (counter-clockwise, again because of a high rail on the connection by the spot you were standing; ugggh!) I was able to get the 4-unit GP-7 consist programmed and with full vollume and 4 horns-a-blowin; got the 21-car freight on the main for a little fun!
To make it up to you, lets plan a weekend for me to come out to you and I'll buy the cannoli.
PS - Gas is cheaper than it has been all summer right now in CNY!
Thanks,
Mario
Sounds good, Mario.
As I said Saturday, it's always an adventure running a modular layout at a show. A few glitches are always part of the experience. But, lots of people appreciate your efforts.
We have a couple of shows coming up in Albany on November 18th and a bigger one on Dec 2.
Jim
JP,
I'll ask the head of the club if there are any plans to come out for the shows and set up, that would be great! As you may know, we didn't renew our lease at Shoppingtown Mall in Syracuse... From what I understand, they wanted to up our rent and it was beyond our means... so, we are now looking for space in the greater-Syracuse area.
If anyone knows of anything evailable, please let us know... www.CNYNHRS.org.
Hey, what did you think of the new station scene, with all those tracks and the Central station which still stands along I-690?
Thanks,
Mario
jim i think i may have met you not sure though. were you trying to get some people to join a train society for 9.98$ for 6 months?
Traindork,
No, that wasn't me. I was just one of the many guys wandering around taking it all in (and carrying a bigger bag of treasures than I had planned to buy).
Mario,
I'm not sure if the show organizers are looking for groups to set up layouts. The one on the 2nd of December is the bigger one and probably worth a trip for you just to look around. It's not as big as Syracuse but not bad.
Good luck on finding space for your layout. It's an ongoing battle for most groups I know.
But, you're welcome to take a trip over here anytime to see my layout and the one at the Mohawk Valley Railroad Company train store that we built. It's in the current issue of OGR magazine. Bring some of the other guys in your group too if you can - all are welcome (as are the canolis you mentioned ).
Shoot me an email (in profile) and we'll set up a time. I'm pretty flexible (the advantage of being retired!).
Jim
ok Jim i was the tall fat guy with a backpack on i run out of hands soo often.
