While working part-time/going to college back in the 70’s, subway cars (many R32’s for sure) had all sorts of mechanical difficulties and you’d hear the dreaded announcement “this train is being taken out of service” - all the worse if I was lucky enough to actually have a seat!!! One night, we were stopped at Newkirk Ave. on the D line when they made the announcement... I followed instructions and got off, but a small group of malcontents decided they wouldn’t, just increasing the delay for everyone else. After several entreaties by the train crew, they closed the doors and announced that the train was going express to the Coney Island yard where, I am sure, a host of Transit Police were waiting for them since there was a Transit District (aka Precinct) at Coney Island. And the cars certainly didn’t look as good as those in the video!!!
