My grandson and I saw it thunder its way through Des Plaines on Friday! We were surprised at how many people were at the spot I chose to try for pictures (close to 200), as the location was basically a side street in an industrial park! Turns out that I chose well, apparently it is a very popular spot for regular train watchers. Today, we took my wife, his mom and sister to go see it in West Chicago. It was a privilege to see it, especially on Friday.

For 3R O UP passenger cars, look at Lionel 2019-2 catalog.

The original excursion set has a couple of the cars from the front of this train. The Experience baggage car is in the catalog now, but the Kenefick observation is unique. Now that everyone has had a chance to see it, maybe 2020 volume one! Fingers crossed.

It will be interesting to see if they take it out on the other tours later this year, or just move the drumhead to a different obs. BTW this train has a second obs in it. The rounded corners of the dome obs are very subtle. Last dome in the train. Took me a while to even notice it.

An abridged edition, I guess...too bad.

Not at all abridged,I thought you were talking about the fact I took that photo on a bridge, all the equipment on this excursion was on fairly close display in West Chicago. I was happily surprised that the public was allowed to right up to the engine on the right side. The passenger cars looked they were fresh from the factory. Incredible to me that the Union Pacific keeps their heritage alive. I certainly appreciate it.

It's all about that drumhead. I know NOBODY has done that!

If someone on the forum has not done it yet then maybe someone else could take a photo of the drumhead, close up and square to the camera. That picture could be printed on transparency using a laser printer and applied to any round drumhead.

I finally watched some videos of the Ogden trip. With the exception of the steam support cars, Art Lockman, Howard Fogg and Lynn Nvstrom, that entire consist is different from what is currently on tour. They took the theater car Idaho as their tail car on that trip.

I think I finally figured out what this unusual looking car is. It is a generator and AC unit for the Experience baggage Promontory. Are you listening Lionel?

That is the HEP power car for the entire train. Each car in the train has its own Air Conditioning/heating unit. That power car provides 480 volt, three phase AC electrical power for the entire train, except for the steam crew support cars, which has another HEP gen set inside the Howard Fogg Boiler - Dormitory car.

Now all we need is a car with the right platform.

Thats the idea Eliot but it would be better of the drumhead filled the frame. After cropping this one some of the resolution is lost.

I just printed this one though and the idea works. I would have to play with the print density some but it took little effort to get an image on transparency material. No camera now but maybe later tonight I can post a pic.

Lionel is doing the Kenefick as well as the Lone Star Business cars. We will have to wait to see how close they get the platforms. Its shown in the catalog with an open vestibule and silver railings.

As for the 2066 power car, Lionel has done the 206 in the first 4 car Excursion set. I was hoping the 2066 would be done for the Bush train as its so unique and not easy to scratchbuild but hopefully they will do it in the future.

Well, the reason I came to that conclusion was, that car didn't go to Ogden. All that train had for HEP was the Fogg, unless they were drawing power off the diesel.

Have you (or anyone else) ever seen that car before? Did they do it up special for these tours? It's just car number 2066, no name.

I saw it at Elk Grove Village just west of O'Hare Airport. Stood on top of a weedy pile of debris with about 20 other people and took a shaky video (sorry, I'm getting on...). One of the guys up there felt the need to narrate for everyone else...he didn't have a camera, of course.

Always one of those.  I bring a roll of duct tape.

Same thing recording model railroads, there is always some loud talking guy that must walk near you!

Went to see the parked CP Christmas Train and a railroad policeman came over to tell us we were trespassing by being in a company parking lot 100 feet from the tracks. UP left it to the locals?

Yea seen it pull into West Chicago today. Oh man a beautiful thing. It stopped on the track for about an hour steaming whistle blasts every now and then to a cheering crowd. A lot more people today for the Big Boy then when 3985 was in town. Came home told my wife to top seeing the Big Boy today would have to be seeing Jesus Christ.

IIRC some guy in a 4 man 60's rock band mentioned that dude too!

Nice to see all enjoyed it in their own way and that so far it has been a safe cross country adventure.

No, power can NOT be "drawn off the diesel". The UP has a number of power cars, but #2066 is the largest and the only one with that big cooling system "hump".

Have you (or anyone else) ever seen that car before?

Yes, it has been around for a number of years.

Did they do it up special for these tours?

No, as I said, it has been around for some years.

It's just car number 2066, no name.

Correct. The UP doesn't "name" their power cars.

Thanks Jack, I did go to Railpicturearchives.net and looked up the 2066. The earliest photos of it are from late 2007, so it has been around for at least a dozen years.

Gotta hand it to UP, they have the most interesting collection of passenger equipment, and they aren't afraid to use it.

Going to see the Big Boy tomorrow as it heads west.

Question! I will be in Elburn to watch it run by, there’s 2 tracks side by side running east/west. Will the Big Boy be on the north or south track?

thanks!

Most likely north track.  They use directional running in NE & IA, probably more places than that.  WB on north track; EB on south.  That makes it significantly harder to get a nice shot as you are shooting dark side and into sun.  Best bet is to either get high enough you can shoot down and keep sky out of composition, or hope for heavy overcast (which nicely diffuses light but not so good for exhaust plume.)

Sorry Zett, I did not see your question until now... and the Big Boy has passed Elburn.

But for future use, the UP on this portion of the C&NW is a left hand running railroad at least to Elburn. I'm not sure what happens after Elburn, but that is the end of the line for Metra... North track inbound to Chicago, South Track outbound or west.

Now... I just saw the videos from the Geneva location and I see a double stack freight came through just as the Big Boy was passing.

I bet the people on the north side were pretty ****ed... I suspect nobody ever thinks a train will be on the other track as the Big Boy rolls through town.

I certainly take it into account and avoid shooting over a track.  Otherwise I watch the opposing signals closely.  The other thing that will certainly screw you up is trying to shoot across a road.
