I love these stories. It amazes me the skills and knowledge are still available to do this work.
I wish they go to Altoona and show those folks that used to build steamers how to do it again. there is an old K4 they can use sitting in pisces in the roundhouse.

Needs a new boiler-the old one doesn't meet FRA standards. Of course, the Brits scratchbuilt an entire new loco a few years ago...but, then, the Brits are nutso about steam locos.

Please explain further. There is only one Santa Fe Northern "being restored", so what is the "other" one. The Santa Fe #3751 4-8-4 was restored many years ago, and is currently out of service undergoing the FRA mandated 15 year inspection and re-certification.

Let's play dumb question time:
How much does a restoration like this cost? Taking a locomotive that's been sitting for decades and making it run again. $1 million? 2 million? More? How are such ventures economically possible? The groups have to make money to keep these machines running after they are restored.

It is really almost impossible to attach a "cost to overhaul/restore" number for such a big project, especially when volunteer labor and/or services are involved. Yes, there are certain components that MUST be purchased (especially inside the boiler, such as flues & tubes and superheater tubing & ends) which will require hard dollar donations. Also, the quicker the project needs to be completed, the more money MUST be collected and spent.

Lots, and LOTS of fund raising of a long time.

It is extremely difficult to "make money" with an operating steam locomotive. The best that can be hoped for is making enough money to cover maintenance & operating costs, plus keeping enough in the bank, i.e. in reserver, when the FRA mandated 15 year inspection and re-certification comes due.

You have 2 northerns right.I looking at the fact that another locomotive is being being rebuilt to running order. The other one is a northern also right. It might be down now.But its still way better off than sitting in a park some where. And before you say anything about the down time.Just know at some time their will be 2 big steamers from the santa fe in operation. And as my grand dad used to say."Just hush up and watch and enjoy it!!"P.S.There are a lot of people who thought you would never see 2 santa fe big northerns active. But we are getting there o.k.
Where do they expect to run it? The future of mainline excursions is very bleak now with Amtrak and all class 1’s against public excursions. They would have to run it on a regional, or the Grand Canyon Railway for example.
