I hope someone here can help. I have a Lionel Train Set that my Dad gave me when I was a young kid.  Somewhere along the line the DIESEL Locomotive had issues and my Mother was of the belief if something didn't work it was trash and discarded it.Sigh  I'm now trying to find out what Locomotive originally came with the set.  Unfortunately my memory is no help.  After 48 years they all start looking familiar  I have all the cars that were part of it but researching references such as Doyle's has provided little.  Initially I thought it was 1962 or 63 based on the Cherry Picker but finding no sets with these cars throughout the 60s I've settled on it possibly being a 1967 set that included whatever Lionel could find left over to stuff a box. Confused  I have ...........

#6059 Minneapolis & St Louis Caboose (Var B) (1961-69)

#6560 B.E. Crane Car (1955-64) & (1966-69)

#6512 (6511-2 mold for car) Cherry Picker Car w/ Astronaut (1962-1963)

#6062 (Type 2b) NYC Gondola Car w/ 3 Orange Cable Reels (1960)

Type 1063-100 Transformer w/ GREEN button (1960-64)

Sorry for the length but wanted to provide as much detail as possible.  Any help is appreciated.  Saw some out of print books that might hold an answer but hated to spend $80 to find out 1967 info was a blank page...  Thanks

JW, I tried searching but no luck. If you do not have the original carton with the set number it will be harder. Also a few other things. It may have not been 1967 so possibly expand your search. Also at that time dealers were making up sets and selling them. With the caboose you mention the engine may have been a GP 9 or GP 7 in that road name. Just a shot in the dark......Paul

JW I found this by chance maybe this will help

Production:  1961 - 1969

History
The 6059 M. & St. L. (Minneapolis & St. Louis) caboose is a common item. It was manufactured by Lionel during the entire 1960's and included in numerous catalogued and uncatalogued sets, as well as being a separate sale item. This is an extremely easy caboose to acquire in nice condition as there were so many produced. Although there are several variations, only one can be considered hard to locate.

Features
Standard features of the 6059 included; AAR trucks, black frame, black end-railings without a brakewheel and AAR trucks. Although the AAR trucks are standard, they can be either the early or late style, single or dual couplers and finally operating or non-operating couplers.

Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information

Molded Red - Shown in the photo above - The most common version of the 6059 caboose.

Painted Red - This is the hardest variation to locate. Although not rare, it is difficult to locate a painted red version in collectable condition. It is assumed to be part of the first production run in 1961.

Molded Tuscan - Not as common as one might expect. The molded tuscan shell is harder to find than the molded red version.

Your set is a promotional set from 1963. Set number 19318. This set contained a 617 Santa Fe Diesel with 3 position reverse, horn, and 2 axle magnatraction, a 6512 Cherry Picker car, 6062 Gondola in Black, 6560 Crane with red cab, and 6059 Caboose. There were also other items in the set to make it special such as a cardboard station scene etc.

As lioneltin indicated, your set # is 19318, dated from 1962, assembled for Sears Roebuck,  as "Special Purchase", with a quantity of ONLY 100, ever made.  The loco was a 617 Santa Fe, listed as 617X-1, featuring 3 position E unit & 2 axle magne-traction.  One HIGHLY RARE item as part of this set, was the 908-10 Scenic Station W/tunnels (made of cardboard), which were packaged separately, to retailers.

From your listed items, the 19318 is THE ONLY SET and NO OTHERS, period!!

The above information comes from "Authoritative Guide to LIONEL PROMOTIONAL OUTFITS 1960-1969, John W. Schmid.

If you want detailed content from the complete set, of ALL the items, send me an email.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.  I had just about given up on ever identifying the engine that came with the set.  The fact that it came from Sears makes complete sense.  My Dad had taken it to Howard Griffin Land O Toys for repair and I wrongly assumed it was where "Santa" got it.  I remember my parents shopped a lot at Sears so this fits.  Apparently Santa shopped there also.  Based on the responses here, I have located a 617 Sante Fe Switcher in what appears to be good shape and am waiting on its arrival.

The Train Station wasn't with my set/ outfit.  It isn't a problem though because the real value of the set being "complete" is nostalgia.

I again thank everyone who took the time to read my request for help and respond.
