Just received Strasburg Ore Car six car order from Pat's Trains yesterday after a two and a half year wait.  Ran them twice around grandson's 4 x 8 layout and in addition to all the cars bouncing through the Fastrak turnouts one was shorting out.  When I examined it I could see that one of the wheels was loose on the axle and wouldn't stay on the spline.

So I was curious to see if these were the new RMT trucks that were being installed (which caused some of the delay).  I posted it yesterday and Bill Henning confirmed that these are in fact the new trucks.

So I ran the other five around the track one more time and two more shorted out.  When I examined them TWO MORE wheels had come off the axles.  Mind you this is around the outer loop of the layout with 036 curves and 048 easements in addition to the fact that the wheels came off on the straightaway.

I cannot imaging how bad the old trucks were if these are the new design.  Hopefully I can get a full refund.

I spoke with Pat recently regarding my order of a couple of the new ore cars.  He was very enthusiastic about the new trucks.  I have a couple of the cars that had the really bad trucks - still waiting for the replacements to arrive - but have not had the same bad experience with the latest ones.  Have you shared your concerns with @PATSTRAINS or @RMT - Ready Made Trains?  If so, what did they say?

Pat's is not open yet.  I emailed Walter at RMT about the problem.

I thought at first maybe the old trucks were somehow on these which is why I posted a picture of them in the other thread.  Here is a closeup of a truck (one that does not have the wheel coming off).

Aren't those the same as the ones you have?  I also don't understand the coupler release tab.  It is right behind the air hose and cannot be pushed when the cars are coupled unless you break off the air hose first.

Here is a pic of my "new" and "old" trucks.  The tuscan colored car (top) is new, and the truck appears to be similar to yours.  The orange (bottom) car has the old troublesome truck.  My new ones have taken a few laps on a Fastrack loop without switches.

Re the uncoupling tab, it looks like it would be best to either use a remote uncoupler track or reach in there with a bamboo skewer.  There are very few couplers that I can operate with my fingers without knocking the car off the track anyway, so that part of the design doesn't bother me.

Thanks for confirming Mallard.   I can live with the coupler niggle but not with the wheels not staying on 3 out of 6 cars.  I wrote to Pat's asking for a full refund.  Maybe mine were an enigma, but a full half of them??? (although technically if there are two trucks per car it's 1/8th of them  ).

Hey, John

We are sorry you are having this issue. Please contact us and we will get you a return label for the 6 car set.  I can honestly tell you that we have sold over a thousand of the different varieties of ore cars and this is a first with this problem. We would be happy to replace the trucks with good ones if you desire or issue you a refund. We stand behind the product we sell. RMT is learning and making corrections to its product when a deficiency is found.

Thanks

Best Regards

Pat

I went back and looked specifically at my Strasburg car, since the earlier problems were specific to certain road names.  No noticeable difference between that and my other new cars.  Good luck with a resolution on your cars, and I'm hoping that it's not a widespread problem.  Please post regarding any updates.

Thanks Pat,

Truly appreciate the CS.

I had sent a request before you posted this.  Much appreciated.  Maybe we can exchange trucks or even wheel sets if you have them??

Thanks,

John

Follow-up:  Pat wants all six back.  He wants to document it with RMT, indicated that issue should not happen.  He said he would replace the trucks and send them back once he is finished documenting the incident.  I sent them back via return label he issued.   Great service.

John
