LOL!
We stumbled across Thomas at Strasburg years ago. My son was about 3 or 4 and was really into Thomas at the time. He was in the shops for service and as we were driving by I caught a flash of bright blue in a usually black and grimy environment. Needless to say we went back and shot some photos near the most useful engine. He was fired and outside the shop. The crew even blew the whistle for us. Not sure which was louder, the whistle or the shrieks of excitement from my son. This was in the pre-digital days. Gotta scan the photos one day.

Only locomotive I know that has oscillating eyes. Would have fit in perfectly on the SP when they used Mars lights.
@jay jay , That Engine In That Photo Is 1 Of The Day Out With Thomas Dummy Units.
I'll bet to a lot of kids he is real. Anyone ever see the British version of the show? Different in a few ways. I wasn't aware that Thomas had been " anthropomorphised ". I hope it didn't hurt..........

Thomas originated from the RWS, but wasn't actually the first engine introduced. Three Railway Engines came out in 1945, Thomas the Tank Engine came out in 1946. As far as basis, the engine thomas was based off of in the books was the LBSCR E2, with the extended tanks. Originally he was a LNER J50 from the reverend's illustrations, but the illustrator changed this. As for his basis, the E2's were scrapped by 1963, and the J50's by 1966.
You forgot to add a painted eye patch, moustache and buckteeth on his face. :-)
