pay off debts

get the wife the nice car she deserves but has never had

set aside some for the Church

sock away kid's college money

Adopt more kids

expand the house, make a call to some one like Trainworks to come fill the new space

Make sure I was invested in some thing that was going to keep me from losing everything.  Definitely build a small hydro electric plant to pass on an income stream to the family when I'm gone.

After all that stuff - maybe try to convince John down in Hagerstown MD to let me restore the WM k-2 Pacific sitting down there so we could take it up and down the coast.

If I got really crazy for Steam I could provide some backing to Dave Wardale to finish the new locomotive design he started, Maybe just have it make look more American.

Heck I might even take a vacation!

if i won, i would try to help people who need it.  aka like students who there families can not help them with the cost of college, give food and money to the food banks, etc.  i would not spend it but would use the interest to help the people.  i would also want to buy my mother a brand new car of her choice.  put some money aside for my niece and nephews  education.  after i would do all of that i would treat me self to a party with all of my family and just sit there and smile.  life to is short to have to many wants.  when i die all i want to be said about me is that i was a good man, and that i would be missed.

Why?

Why not?

Cause usually you get those as gifts at Christmas time....

So, that means I'm not allowed to buy a new pair of socks with lottery winnings?  What's this world coming to...

If you won a really big lottery it would make your life a lot more complicated and not necessarily better. Everyone notices the few big winners but not the millions of losers.

The lottery is a tax on fools and dreamers. You can get as much entertainment by throwing money down a toilet.

In any substantial way, not a thing I'm not doing now.  I'd probably drink slightly better wine more often, I might stay in larger hotel rooms at fancier hotels when I travel, but my wife and I really do have everything we want.   I wouldn't buy a bigger house, or a boat, or a second home, etc.  I wouldn't buy more toy trains, or more or more expensive cars, or more art or jewelry.

I would buy the North Carolina Zoo another Rhinocerous (long story, not for here) and maybe a Polar Bear (one of theirs died yesterday: they are a bear short), but that's about all I'd do with the money, I think.

Maybe true, but I wouldn't mind giving it a go & see for myself.

I've been rich and I've been poor. Rich is better.

when I first saw the title of this thread I thought it was asking what things you would do with your model trains/layout and some answered that way, but clearly it was about larger issues. I enjoyed some of Lee Willis' generous suggestions and the comforting thought that he and his wife had all they want/need although they might notch it up a bit in terms of what wine they drink (I'll toast to that!). I have to admit being in Lee's boat in terms of having what we want and probably not changing our lifestyles very much. so, for my money (sans lottery, or maybe with it) I give the prize to traindork for his generosity, compassion and heartfelt feelings about his own legacy. congratulations, traindork. if I were ever to win that lottery, I would hope to be able to contribute to your goals as well.

Personally, I just need two antique cars (1958 Plymouth Fury and 1981 Back to the Future Delorean) and getting them in pristine working conditions .

That aside, I'd definitely just use the money to be able afford traveling across our nation to see all of these people who have great layouts and having fun seeing them, Neil Young and Dick Kughn being at the top.

And oh yes, being able to build one myself, go figure~
