Has anyone tried replacing the factory speaker from a Proto-sound 2, or 3 engine to get a different sound?  If so, how did it turn out and what type of speaker did you use? I'm pretty happy with the sounds of PS2 & 3, but I would be happier with a deeper sound for the chuffing. Love the chuffing sound of the MTH Gauge One Hudson, now THAT'S a chuff! I realize I probably can't get it that deep with O-scale, but even a little would be nice.

if you like that, it is the same components with a bigger speaker. I have achieved much better results using aftermarket speakers in O scale steam tenders. I put a peerless speaker in my 3rd Rail Niagara w/ a PS2 board and it sounds great. Nice and deep chuffs. Not overpowering the room though.

There are plenty of other good choices as well. Plug in the size of the speaker you can fit and do a search:

I've used the less expensive ones as well. I wanted to try a better one and see if I noticed a difference. I guess you get what you pay for, to a point.

I'm not sure I'd pay 50 or 60 for a tiny speaker in one engine unless I had the spare change.

Wow. Thank you for the great compliment!

I do have to state that MTH a few years back started upgrading their speakers where they could. The diesels got new speakers with foam surrounds and better low end. The steamers are all over the charts with some applications needing special speakers.

I turn my sounds down most of the time so it's not a huge difference. I had to play around to see what I could get though. Many forum members came up with their own solutions. Installing MTH components into other manufacturer's allowed me this experimenting opportunity.
