Improve protosound with a new speaker ?

From what i have read, Lionel has the best O gauge speaker known as fat boy, but they haven't been able to fit it into every locomotive.

Interesting thought, thanks!  I have heard about that speaker, wonder if anyone has ever tried it in an MTH engine? Certainly has a imposing name, doesn't it? LOL!

If it fits and the impedance matches it should work.

if you like that, it is the same components with a bigger speaker. I have achieved much better results using aftermarket speakers in O scale steam tenders. I put a peerless speaker in my 3rd Rail Niagara w/ a PS2 board and it sounds great. Nice and deep chuffs. Not overpowering the room though.

I've used the less expensive ones as well. I wanted to try a better one and see if I noticed a difference. I guess you get what you pay for, to a point.

I'm not sure I'd pay 50 or 60 for a tiny speaker in one engine unless I had the spare change.

I put 2 8 ohm speakers in this engine. One was the Fatboy in the cooling section and another in the fuel tank.

It sounds the same outside as the stock G scale MTH overall.

Sounds and looks terrific !  I miss my MTH Gauge one engines, but I had no where to run them other then the living room floor (circle) and that got rather boring. You certainly do nice work and I love your trains!

I do have to state that MTH a few years back started upgrading their speakers where they could. The diesels got new speakers with foam surrounds and better low end. The steamers are all over the charts with some applications needing special speakers.

 I turn my sounds down most of the time so it's not a huge difference. I had to play around to see what I could get though. Many forum members came up with their own solutions. Installing MTH components into other manufacturer's allowed me this experimenting opportunity.
