"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I was thinking about building a small n scale layout in a brief/suit case for when I travel.  I'm 14, and dad only touches S, O, and Standard gauge.  So this is my project.  Sometimes, I i get bored in our Suburban.  Don't have a phone, or any handheld device.  I run my trains conventionally.  The Suburban has 12v plugs at the back seats.  I thought about getting a cord, plugging it into the layout and controlling the speed/direction with a rheostat.  In a book of dad's, there is a picture of a simple rheostat:

Could I use this?  The book is from 1951.

Rheostats were the way we controlled speed before all the solid state electronics  happened. Voltage out is load dependent and not certain how well they would work with N. When transistors became available a slew of transistorized throttles were developed and written about in the magazines in the 60's.  Do an internet search and you're sure to find something simple. Try this web site for a starter
