1st time I've seen them side by side.  What a beast.

Apparently, size matters in power supplies!

 

I love my ZW-L - among the best things Lionel makes.

Good grief Charlie Brown.  I had no idea they were that big.

And to think when I got my first Lionel O-27 starter set in 1966, it came with a small 1033 transformer!!!  That thing was miniature compared to the postwar ZW, which I thought was pretty impressive when I first saw one.  And now we have the ZW-L which makes the original ZW seem small.  Time marches onward for sure.

How is this bad boy run MTH proto2/3 engines? OK, does it have any of those sine problems or is all good?

The instructions did call out that it will run other manufactures locomotives via conventional remote control, however I do not own any MTH engines because of the additional control systems required (TIU and MTH DCS Remote)... hmm maybe one day.

That towers the old ZW in all dimensions. Since I run only PW/Conventional and have a PW ZW, KW and 1033, would this new ZW-L beast be of any benefit to me?

Well for one you condense 3 into one. This ZW-L could easily replace three of my post war ZW's. Plus the amp and volt meters never have you guessing.

I replaced my 2 Z4000 with one.

Yes, the ZW-L is large...and it's ONE GREAT piece of equipment.  I have two Z-4000s that I've had for years.  I was going to keep one of them and sell one--but I've decided to sell both and just go with the ZW-L.  

 

It's that good and that powerful.  Just like old times in the '50s--only much better!  

Works great in my application.  I love it's features.  I really don't use all that power but it's there if need be.

 

Flanked by a Postwar and Modern, with Amp/Volt meters.

 

 

Never mind Gomez.  What would Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor do with it?

Or better still, maybe we should get the two of them together.

Everything was big to us when we were little.  Our backyard seemed like acres.  Summer recess was endless.  Have you gone back to the house and yard where you were born?  It's the same with the old ZW you had, almost.

Are you sure that Tim Allen, from Home Improvement TV show, don't work for Lionel now?

All kidding aside, I have notice that I can draw a continuous 8 amps and not over heat my transformers, the ZW's would get very hot. So warm that the room started to become uncomfortable (when you have four going at once).

The integrated Legacy control is fantastic, and I cannot wait run/experiment with conventional engines that I could not run before. No more TPC 300/400.

Circuit breaker protection is above the ZW and you no longer need the battery houses

Its nice to know if you are loosing the Legacy/TMCC signal - the transformer 'Lionel' light will flash.

 

So Bigger is not only better, but with many improved features for operators like us... this one gets my two thumbs up! 

 Might as well add a Knievel, and a couple of bascule bridges. 

 

 

 

 

Well I was able to draw 8 to 9 amps with 2 hours of running and the fan did not even come on, where as the Post war ZW became very warm to the touch.
