I saw a thread recently where different people on this forum posted photos of their various types of display shelving. Many are very creative, and all are impressive when you can see your favorite trains displayed for you and the visitors to your layout.

I bought ten shelves from a vendor on Etsy a few months ago, and have now gotten them all up, displaying all of my locomotives and rolling stock. These cases also have a plexiglass clear cover to keep dust and curious fingers off of everything. They are of a very high quality and are easy to hang.

I don't yet have a layout, but I'm really enjoying looking at my modest collection in these beautiful cases. I hope you guys like them. If it's permissible, here's the link to the vendor I bought them from.

Buying as many as I did, I was given a significant discount. I can highly recommend them.

Lucky ducks to have all that wall space, all your displays look beautiful and I am green.  My shelves are along the wall under the layout edge, but right now covered up with boxes of engines and passenger cars, plus several vintage Lionel 027 sets.  Be careful though if you find the need to branch out into other rooms.  A friend, long passed, had a BB gun collection that was massive, every square inch of his house except the kitchen and the master bedroom had the walls festooned with every BB gun of every type, starting with the first ones,  and their variations, mounted  from baseboard to crown moulding.   Needless to say, his wife must have had enough, since he did get divorced.  The single wide mobile home sized trailer in his back yard,  full stem to stern with BB guns may have played into that.

I have built my shelves under the layout on the sides. I attached a photo of a couple of them. Now that all those are full, I have begun to start building and hanging shelves on the wall. Will have to start moving some of the other stuff on the walls. Second pic isn’t very good but that shelf has some larger steamers in it! Love displaying the locos.

1) What spacing, from the front edge of the shelf to the back edge of the shelf (wall) seems to work best so you can fit your fingers over the top of an engine and insure you have a firm grip?

2) What height, from the top of one shelf to the underside of the shelf above it also works out the best?

Grabbing an "F" unit off the shelf is one thing but grabbing a Y6b or Big-Boy is another......

Thanks in advance for your answers...

I used 4 inches front to back for each shelf and 7 inches top to bottom shelf to shelf. Prob too much space but gives me ease of removal and placement and some wiggle room for other types of cars ie tall boxcars, auto carriers etc.

Looks great Tom - nice shelves.

And that's how most of us started out; with a "modest collection."
