Go to info on the CAB2 and make sure the engine is set up for TMCC or CAB1. Hopefully that's the problem.

The receiver and motor driver are in the engine, boards in the tender are Railsounds. Take the shell off the engine and make sure the antenna wire is hooked up. The two from the handrails are connected to the wire to the board via a wire nut. May have come loose or not properly tightened by the PO.

I think Rod has the answer, the Legacy remote defaults to Legacy control when you set a new engine, you have to change it to TMCC or CAB1.

Well, Rats! Best I can tell with a continuity check, the hand rails are insulated from the shell. They are well twisted together to the command lead with a wire nut. The Legacy hand held devise is set to TMCC. And it still remains silent. I'm really frustrated.

First off, being silent isn't a reception issue.  If the locomotive isn't getting the TMCC signal, the sound would come up in conventional mode.  The fact that it's totally silent suggests that the tender electronics and/or wiring to the tender is where the issue is.

Would that condition be independent such that it works normally, as it should, in conventional mode on my work bench?

Not sure what really changed. I reconnected the tender a few times while the engine was on the tracks without the shell installed. I've determined that the four connector plug fits only one way, but I re-plugged it several times anyway. While standing there scratching my head, it started working. Can't explain that unless it's sensitive to obscene language.

Sounds like the tender connection needs work.  That tether frequently develops broken wires at the connector, that might be the whole problem.
