1 - I have one. On the shelf for a while - but one of the A's is the "control" unit,

and the other is essentially motors only, tethered to the control. It will not run

alone. You could certainly use a dummy B behind the control A.

(The non-control-A could be upgraded to ERR Cruise Commander, giving you another

independent A unit.)

2 - On the subject of "problems", mine have never given any, the sound and

cruise are good, I don't think that I used the smoke. I do run Command only; I

do not know how they act in Conventional.

K-Line produced different versions of E-8 sets not all of which had smoke. In fact the ones I have (K-28841 Rock Island AA set) feature motorized spinning roof fans instead. I can confirm that while the lead unit can run on its own the trailing unit cannot; all the TMCC controls are in the lead unit and the second unit has to be tethered to it.

These engines are very nicely detailed and painted. I can't actually find the set in the K-Line legacy catalog but here is the UP ABA set, which also had motorized roof fans instead of smoke: K-Line UP E-8 set

In terms of operating issues, the power supply to the roof fans in my trailing unit failed but I have simply provided an alternative source of DC power because the fans spin whenever there is power to the track.

I remember someone posted a comment on more serious operating issues with the UP 3 engine set stemming from the way the units are connected/powered; see here K-Line E-8 ABA thread for that.

I don't know about the other models, but I can assure you that the K-Line K28802 PRR E8's has absolutely no jumpering option to run the trailing A unit independently.
