Just received a very nice PRR F7 B unit with smoke for a possible project. Put it on the track last evening and am not able to hear anything from the smoke unit. Switch says 'ON' but nothing. Am not familiar with these and the seller suggested that it might be controlled by the A unit through the tether. Am guessing this might be the situation as I see a 10 pin connector at each end.

If this is indeed the case, can I bypass the system and have the smoke unit on full time?

My plan is to run this with my Atlas F3s and repaint it to match at some future date.  The Atlas has smoke in the powered unit with TMCC. Don't know if Atlas made a B unit for the GM&O?

This certainly s a nice model with two sets of air hoses at each end, excellent diaphragms, and nice detail. Even included a pair of short-shank couplers. It appears to be slightly lower in height than the Atlas A's.

Alternate plan will be to pick up the matching K-Line F7s...

If there is no SMOKE ON/OFF switch on the B unit, it is indeed controlled from the A unit, either from the main smoke switch or in TMCC with the 8 and 9 buttons. If the B unit has pickup rollers, you could rewire the smoke unit to run all the time. You would have to disconnect the wire from the A unit and power it from the track. IMPORTANT: I am not sure if the smoke units in these K-Line engines will run on direct track power or if they need a regulated power supply - I think they need regulated voltage but I am not sure. If you want to go that route, check with a smoke unit expert like Gunrunner John. He'll know for sure, and so will several other guys who do a lot of smoke unit work.
