Hi Guys...

I have a number of spare Christmas light LEDs that are just taking up space.  SO, I thought why not add lights to my PW NAVY and ARMY Switchers.  They fit quite nicely in the froward and reverse light ports.  My question, what do I need to do to insure they light, are directional, and do not burn out when I apply track voltage????  I tried one and it blew at about 8 volts AC...guessing there is some sort of step down in the light string...

Thanks in advance for your input and help...

White LED's run on 3V DC, and must be current limited, so it's no surprise they died.

For a PW switcher, you can wire them so they're directional wiring them between the motor armature leads and to the center roller.  You'll have to add a diode to protect them from reverse voltage and a resistor to provide current limiting.  I'd start with a resistor value of around 470 and see how they look  With two sets of these, one wired to each armature connection, you'll have one lit going forward, the other lit going backwards, aka directional lights.

If you're wondering why this works, the E-Unit is swapping the connections to the armature, and in each direction, one side of the armature is connected to track center roller voltage, the other side is connected to the field coil.  When the E-Unit cycles, the opposite side of the armature is connected to the center roller and the opposite one to the field coil.  Since the other side of the LED is connected to the center roller, when that armature connection is connected through the E-Unit to the roller, there is no voltage across the LED.

Ok All...

I found the needed parts gunrunnerjohn spoke of and following his directions was successful in getting the LEDs working and mounted on may engines...

Here are the  Radio Shack Part numbers, Resistors #271-115 470 Ohm and Silicon Diode #1N4003, the LEDS were left over from my Christmas lights.

I used a #11 drill bit to hone the light ports to accept the LEDs...

Not sure the photos will come through...my first attempt at doing so. If they don't make it I will try again...

Thanks agin to all who helped me with this project...
