I am considering a purchase of a 3rd Legacy control system due to problems with my #990 & 993 sets. Average price for the Control System is $365 plus shipping and tax. I saw on eBay a “Legacy Control Expansion” consisting of a cab 2 remote and base charger selling new for about $65 less. What is the difference? I attempted to find out on the Lionel website, but after 10 minutes of searching I got lost in the jungle.

The expansion set is just a charger and Cab2. The base unit has no "guts" for controlling your layout just a charger for the remote. The remote will be the same as what you get in the full Legacy system.
The less expensive set )the 993) is for a Cab2 and Base which is a charger only. Not a Base that puts the signal on the track, talks to the Cab2, etc. Just a charger for the Cab2. I recommend one since it is a nice cool charger for the Cab2 since it lacks all the rest of the electronics.
Lionel's web site is lame. The search engine is particularly awful and inadequate...
What I really need is only a cab2 remote, so I assume buying the expansion set would be the more economical way to go?
thanks for the reply.

If you acquire an extra charging base, chances are it's pretty marketable on the forum.
Yep, I'm sure folks would like to glom onto an expansion set as it's a better charger than the #990 command base.
Hi John,
just ordered the expansion set from a forum sponsor. I may have mistakenly quoted one of my set #s as an expansion set, but it isn’t. Both charger bases have an antenna. I don’t think a simple charger base would require an antenna.

Bill
You used the wrong number, the charging base has nothing but a power jack. If it has an antenna, it's the command base.
I had trouble with my remote - a row of bottoms stopped working. I contacted Lionel and they will repair the remote under warranty even though it’s 5 or 6 years old. I heard they repair all remotes. Of course Lionel is down because of the “stay at home” so it will take some time.
anyhow, if it’s only the remote, you may get a free repair. It may be worth checking out.
