I hooked up my new legacy system and I started a engine with it's id. Everything works , whistle, coupler etc but when I turn the red knob it wont run. I press boost the engine runs and of course stops right away when I release the button. What did I do wrong?

Is the Train Brake slider all the way down? If so, push it up towards the top.
Yes I have it up on the - but still not working. The engine will start up when i turn the knob also but not run. I tried my cab 1 and it runs
what locomotive? TMCC, Legacy, etc?
TMCC K4 but I just tried my NYC S1 and it does the same thing
Have you set up the TYPE and CONTROL values for these engines? FOr the K4, try TYPE Steam and control CAB1. Setting these options to match the particulars of each engine will give the best performance from a given engine.
Another possibility is that the Speed Limit has been inadvertently set. From the Legacy manual:
Speed Limit Commands
To prevent inexperienced operators from operating an engine at an unsafe speed, it is recommended to set a High Speed Limit for that engine. This can only be done in the address screen, which is accessed by pressing either the TR or ENG address key. If the speed limit is set, the icon will appear inverted.
Use the Speed Limit Touch-Screen ICON to set a speed limit for your engines.
Set Speed Limit
With your engine or train at the desired high speed limit,
1. Press and release the ENG or TR address button
2. Press and hold the speed limit Touch-Screen ICON
3. SPEED LIMIT SET will appear at the top of your display screen 4. Speed Limit is set.
Clear Speed Limit
With your engine or train on the track,
1. Press and release ENG or TR
2. Press and hold the speed limit Touch-Screen ICON 3. Speed Limit is cleared
Another thing to check...
Does the display show this where ENG should be without touching the Brake/Boost button? If so the thumb wheel is sticking.
And and here is the speed limit Rudy speaks of...

I did manage to set the speed limit to 4 bars and then I set the speed limit. when i turn the speed control in either direction the speen lowers but wont increase. is there a way to reset the remote to factory settings like a DCS remote?
Hi GENE,
Push and hold the window that says speed limit and it will turn off and run as normal. Hope this helps.
Gene did you see my first picture? Does your remote have this? The arrow down?
no it just says eng under the number
when I turn the wheel a 0 is under the engine ID
When you iD the engine and before you do anything else is the speed limit highlighted like in picture 2?
Might be helpful to post a pic of the 990 right after he id's the engine.....
-Pete
Just for fun I did set my speed limit to 0. Turning the knob produced a 0 but also clearly displayed "speed limit".
I recall posts regarding defective throttle knobs on some of the recent legacy systems. If you can't get your locos to respond you may want to contact Lionel regarding further suggestions or repair.
Fill out the form under the "Service/Repair Question" link. http://www.lionel.com/ContactUs/
It does say speed limit and 0 below eng
Address the engine with the issue. Do not push any other buttons so that the numeric keypad is still numbers with the startup and shut down icons. Next to that should be the Speed Limit button. Push and hold it until the display reads "Speed Limit Clear" or something to that effect and the icon goes from dark to light.

I tried that and it still does the same thing. I e mailed Lionel and the dealer I bought it from. It must have a issue with the wheel.
Looking at your pictures, push the "Train Brake" to the top. The "train brake keeps the engine from moving.
Hi GENE, Just throwing this out there but did you try resetting the engine?

Yes tried resetting and other engines also. I spoke to Angela at Lionel and after telling her the problemshe gave me instructions to ship the remote and base and e mailed me the RA#. It's at FedEx now and Chris at Nicholas Smith will credit my Visa with the shipping back to Lionel. I can give Lionel credit there turn around time on repairs is 1-2 weeks vs MTH up to a year. I want to thank everyone especially Marty for all your help.
GENE,
Glad you got an RA. Lionel is the best in the business with their repairs. I have had problems with smoke units and have gotten them back in a few weeks. Hope all works out.

Mine just did the same thing, I have three legacy engines, and the throttle will not increase. I have had it for about two months with no problem, now ....... The quess I have is that the knob works when scrolling, is that independent of the throttle?
at least I still have dcs, good reason to have two systems
.....or two 990's.
I still have my Cab 1 and DCS. I usually us the DCS remote to run my TMCC locos but you still need a TMCC remote for some features like setting the speed limit so you don't have a $1200.00 locomotive fly against a wall or to the floor. I'm sure Lionel have several to trade off from what I read about all the problems. So I should have one back in a week or so.
Thanks for the information. A lot of industries have dual systems, so should our railroads. I have back up transformers so I guess it time for a legacy backup too. My layout is 45' x 18' and I wondering if one legacy base will cover the area? I am going to order a second 990.
You can only use one Legacy base for a layout, it will work fine for yours.
I do somewhat the same as Marty does so buying 2 complete Legacy sets was a no brainer for me. I can load the spare base with the Christmas Locos and use it with the remotes and take the remotes out to the train room and use them out there on an entirely different set on engines without a reprogram.
Ron
I have a second Legacy base, it's the one I take with me to modular shows in case our base takes a dive. However, you can't connect two to the same layout, they duke it out and nothing works.
Guns,
I only have one, so far it's all I have needed.

Dave, we had the club Legacy base flake out on us, that's why I figured to have a spare...
I finally recieved my legacy Cab 2 back from Lionel after 5 weeks. They replaced the PCB which was warped and adjusted the Velocity spleen shaft. Strange for a new unit to leave the factory like that.
I think they were rushing them out as there were numerous delays, and the natives were getting restless. I have three of the older CAB2 units, and none have exhibited any issues. The only problem I've had is having to fix the charger in the bases.
