First of all I would like to say hello to everyone on The forum this is my first official post as I have just joined! Some background on what I am doing, I have been a railway enthusiast since I was probably 5 years old with intrests in British and American steam and early American diesel, that being said being said in the last year or so I have decided to dive in head first as I am of an age where I can finally afford to get involved with my dream fascination of o guage trains and begin building a small collection and start work on a Lionel layout, my focus for now is postwar style traditional engines and rolling stock , that's why I discovered lionchief plus and I love it , I can buy quality classic Lionel engines and operate them just like a real railroad 18 v power to the track and control each engine separately it's perfect for me! That being said I would like to open with a question about operating lionchief plus engines , I'm having a problem with them stalling jerky operatin and cutting power to the track , I have a small o72 oval for a test track right now and I am using a power pack from a set I think it's 1.8 amp output and my guess is that I need more ampreage? At low speed the engines will stall and loose power I just have to nudge them and the power back up I can't figure out why sometimes my gp7 will have jerky operation almost like the power is culling in and out really fast and on both of my engines when I fire the coil couplers it seems to cut out the track power all together everything goes dead for a second then starts back up even lighted cars , I'm thinking the coil is asking for to much Amos and opening the circuit breaker in the power pack ? Could anyone help me out is anyone else having these problems with lionchief plus ? If anyone's interested I could post some pictures of my setup and talk about how I improved the smoke units on these engines , I'm hoping this is simply a lack in supplied power problem although I'm not sure why a single engine on the track would loose power at a low speed then I just nudge it and it comes back on any input would be great thank you!

Your power source could be a problem. Lionel has recently gone to a larger power supply for their sets, 54 watt or around 4 amp I believe. I think the smaller ones were a problem for them, especially when people tried to add things to their basic sets. Also as Chessie1971 says Fastrack can have problems with the center pins making good contact. Lionel did a video showing a fix for this which may also help. FasTrack Continuity testing & fix

On a 72" oval it seems like a $ZW might be jumping the gun.

Are you using one engine, because you refer to plural? Are you using The power pack that came with the set? How many cars are you pulling?

if you are running just the engine on a 72 oval, it would seem something else is going on. Even so, there is cheaper power than a ZW. ZWs are great, but check everything first. There is no reason that should be going on.

I bought a new CW80 on eBay for $60 shipped. If I outgrow it, then I'll buy bigger.

let use know what happens.

Thanks for the replies! And yes sorry to clarify I have 3 lionchief engines 2 are lionchief plus Hudson and gp7 and one set lionchief polar express I kit bashed into npk 765 but the problem seems to persist with one engine on or 2 when I fire the coil couplers it cuts all the power for a second , anyway I'm grabbing my multi meter now to check centre rail continuity but I also am leaning towards the power pack from the polar express set not being enough to supply ample current to even fire a coil coupler, I'll let u guys know hoe the continuity check goes!
