A quick video I threw together showing my recently acquired Lionel 1-700E and Rail Chief passenger cars from 1990.  Perhaps not as fancy as some of the more modern models, but a striking set worth having in the collection nonetheless.  Railsounds 1.0 leaves a lot to be desired, but is quite nostalgic and pretty impressive for being 32 years old now.

The only issue I've run into is that the O gauge coupler included with the locomotive doesn't quite match the height of the O gauge dummy coupler included with the Rail Chief cars which leads to unintentional uncoupling.  I have a couple of drawbars on order (similar to what the 250E Hiawatha locomotive utilized to couple to its passenger cars) that I'm hoping will resolve that issue.  Otherwise it's quickly become a favorite of mine.  It might not be as desirable as an original 1930s example, but it's a lot more affordable and a lot less of a gamble given the zinc pest issues many of the originals suffer from.

It looks like the coupler on the tender is mounted in the wrong position since it is sticking out much farther than it should be.  The operating coupler mounts to the rear truck not to the tender body.  The tender mounting hole is for the scale coupler.  This is a common mistake easily made.  Somewhere here on the forum I posted a picture of how the coupler mounts on the truck. I have to go start cooking dinner or I would look for it and provide a link.  Searching for “close coupling” might find it.

I figured that fact out after a couple of those video clips were taken and fixed it.  I thought it looked pretty ridiculous and then was able to pull a digital copy of the manual up to see that I had installed it incorrectly.

Ironically, the problem with the mis-matched coupler heights didn't show itself until I relocated the tender coupler to its proper truck mounted position.  It was working just fine when improperly mounted to the frame...
