Lionel 140 Banjo Repair

According to the Lionel service manual your disassembly process is correct.   There is an adhesive washer,  p/n 140-37 used to attach the driving washer p/n 140-42. (not sure if the replacement driving washer is self adhesive)  It also says to make sure the inside of the cup is clean and dry.  They suggest using talcum powder as a lubricant inside the cup and on the washer.

I scratch the back of the drum with a few marks with a Swiss army knife to give the washer more tooth. I use graphite for a lubricant. The last time I rehabbed the signal was about 7 years ago. Still going strong.

Thanks guys for all your advice !!  I have the driver washer on my York shopping list and will install shortly thereafter.

Interesting thread. There is one thing that I’m not quite clear on; is the drive washer (the washer with the three little “teeth”) glued to the brass washer that is in front of the coil or is the brass washer glued to the front of the coil? In other words, are the drive and “brass” washer glued together so they spin freely in front of the coil? Thank you in advance for your response(s).

The brass washer and the finger washer are solid to the coil. The brass washer makes for a surface to help stick the finger washer. They do not rotate just the drum.

Franktrain, thank you very much. This answers my question. I suspect the issue then is a worn out finger washer - there is not much left to it.

I finally fixed by banjo signal. I glued the brass washer to the coil and the finger washer to the brass washer. I tested it at that point and the cup did not move so I sprayed a silicone on the inside and it works great.
